Today we're diving into something that I've been thinking about a lot lately, especially since moving to Lisbon...
The false economy of being busy.
You know that feeling when you're constantly "doing things" but not really getting ahead?
When you're working harder but somehow making less money? When you're exhausted but your bank account isn't reflecting all that effort?
Yeah, we need to talk about that.
Let me tell you a story…
It was our first week at a new school here in Lisbon. A mum, noticing we were new, introduced herself and asked how we were settling in.
When we said we were loving it, she smiled and said something that hit me right in the heart:
"Lisbon is for people who choose life."
For the past 4 years, I've been slowly unravelling myself from the constant need to have a lot on my plate, from wearing busy as a badge of honour (especially as a “sacral being”- just because I “can” doesn’t mean that I should).
I remember mums at school in Australia asking about our weekend plans and I'd say "oh no plans - probably just movies and the park"
They'd always respond with "half your luck" or "I wish I could do that".
We tell ourselves we don't have a choice but to be busy.
That it's "just life".
And yet here I am, in a country where literally nobody buys takeaway coffees (they actually look at you strangely if you try 😆)
Why? Because you shouldn't be so busy that you can't sit and enjoy your coffee.
Things are slower here (sometimes even annoyingly slow 🥴) but it feels like the final layer of unravelling from busy culture.
Because contrary to what people will have you believe:
❌ Being busy doesn't actually have to be your "normal"
❌ Rushing through each day doesn't either
❌ You don't need big teams or long hours to create wealth-building income
❌ You don't need endless "time-saving hacks" (usually just busy culture in disguise)
Today, I'll show you how being trapped in "busy culture" is actually capping your growth.
We're so caught up in being "busy" that we don't realise this perpetual motion is actually costing us money.
The Real Cost of Being Busy
Let me share some patterns I see all the time in service-based businesses:
Content creation without direction - you know what I mean:
Posting on social media because you "should" but with no real strategy (I find this especially the case for undefined Root centre clients, Sacral clients and also undefined Throat centre clients)
Creating content from scratch every single time instead of having a bank to draw from (Sacrals - just because you “can” doesn’t mean you should. I was sharing how simple my content strategy is and how organised it is (which I teach inside CCBD) at my Selling Soulfully event and people’s minds were blown - my content creation time is around 2 hours per week because of this)
Spending hours on posts that don't actually lead to sales
Feeling like you need to be everywhere online just to stay visible (particularly the case if you have an Undefined Throat centre in Human Design)
Platform overwhelm - this is a big one:
Trying to maintain presence on every new platform that pops up
Spreading yourself so thin that you're not really showing up well anywhere
Getting overwhelmed by content repurposing
Not having a complete sales system working on any of your channels
Constantly chasing the next big thing instead of mastering one channel
Ending up exhausted with minimal results to show for it
And my personal favourite - what I call the "offering overflow":
Creating new offers every time you have a new idea (believe it or not, not every “itch” has to be scratched by your business!)
Having so many different services that your audience is confused
Thinking you need to solve every possible problem your clients might have
Missing out on the power of doing one thing really, really well
Having so many offers that there’s no space to actually create the repeatable systems for just one of them > e.g. an evergreen funnel
Here's what all these patterns have in common: they're costing you money.
Not just in terms of the time you're spending, but in real revenue that you're missing out on because you're too busy being... well, busy.
Here's what I want you to understand:
Being busy isn't just costing you time - it's literally costing you money.
The Three Types of Costs
Let's break this down into three categories:
1. Direct Costs
These are the ones that hit your bank account immediately:
Buying the random programs that you don’t actually need
Spending money on subscriptions for various platforms
Rush fees for contractors
Emergency tech support
Last-minute marketing expenses
Premium rates for urgent help
For example, if you're a coach who regularly needs "emergency" graphics for your programs, you're probably paying 30-50% more than you would with proper planning.
Let’s not forget the subscription costs!
You know how it goes:
You sign up for that $47/month social media scheduling tool
And that $97/month CRM because everyone says you need it
Oh, and that $37/month design platform
Plus three different course platforms because you're too busy to properly research which one actually fits your needs
And let's not forget those three different landing page builders because you keep thinking the next one will be "the one"
Next thing you know, you're spending hundreds every month on tools you barely use or don't use properly because you were too busy to:
a) Properly research what you actually needed
b) Learn how to use the tools you already have
c) Create systems to maximise the tools you're paying for
I had a client recently do an audit of their subscriptions and found they were spending over $500 a month on overlapping tools! That's $6,000 a year basically going down the drain because they were too busy to step back and create a proper tech stack strategy.
And here's the kicker - most of these tools have features that overlap.
You probably don't need three different tools for landing pages, email marketing, AND course hosting when one platform could do it all.
But when we're caught up in being busy, we don't take the time to really investigate our options. We just keep adding more tools, hoping they'll solve our problems.
2. Opportunity Costs
There are also several opportunity costs in the form of hidden revenue leaks:
Missing out on high-value clients because you're too busy with low-value tasks
Not seeing strategic opportunities because you're in the weeds
Unable to create premium offers because you're stuck in delivery mode or you’ve simply got too many offers on your plates
I had a client, a life coach, who was so busy creating content but not taking her potential clients anywhere where they could learn more about her work. As someone who coached on breaking long-standing patterns, understandably, it took her clients a certain period of time to be comfortable to invest. Since she created a masterclass funnel for her work, she’s just about to have a $30k cash month and said to me, “I know where my next 11 leads are coming from”.
So, instead of creating endless amounts of content each week, she:
Has started leveraging her network (she’s a 4th line in Human Design and now that she’s not spending as much time creating content, it's freed up space for her to focus on building relationships and also leveraging the network she had forgotten she had created!)
Creates 1 podcast with 1-2 IG captions (and a story) sending people to that Podcast which has halved her content creation (and actually increased her revenue).
3. Hidden Costs
These are the ones that sneak up on you:
Health issues from chronic stress
Relationship strain
Decreased creativity
Burnout recovery time
But the biggest issue is the cycle that this kind of”busy-ness” creates…
The Chaos Cycle
There's this cycle I see happening in service-based businesses when they are overly busy and not using repeatable strategies and systems:
1. No systems → Reactive mode
You're constantly reinventing the wheel, creating content from scratch, trying to be on every platform, follow up potential clients, build a funnel, check if that funnel is working etc.
2. Reactive mode → Inconsistent delivery
Because you're rushing, your client experience varies wildly
3. Inconsistent delivery → Irregular client experiences
Some clients get amazing service, others get rushed work
4. Irregular experiences → Fewer retention and referrals
Happy clients refer, but inconsistent experiences don't create raving fans
You’re not retaining many of the clients coming in which means you’re constantly having to find new clients.
5. Fewer referrals → Panic marketing
Now you're posting frantically on social media, taking any client who comes along
6. Panic marketing → Attracting wrong clients
Desperate energy attracts desperate clients
7. Wrong clients → More chaos
And the cycle continues...
Breaking the Cycle
So how do we break this cycle?
It starts with recognising that hustle culture is outdated.
The new paradigm of business success isn't about:
Working longer hours
Being available 24/7
Saying yes to everything
It's about:
Creating repeatable systems
Working smarter, not harder
Building sustainable practices
Prioritising quality over quantity
Working in alignment with not just our energy, but our values and what is truly important to us
Real World Example
Let me give you some concrete examples:
Client Example 1
One of my clients, a nutritionist and naturopath, used to:
Repeat the same things over and over to her clients
Spend most of her time in 1:1 consults
Not have any way to generate new leads
After implementing proper systems, she:
Now has a low ticket offer that generates new leads and means her 1:1 clients can move through this content without her needing to repeat herself
Doesn’t need to create as much content because she has a clear sales system from low-ticket to high-ticket coaching (it's wildly good at 50%!)
Client Example 2
Another one of my clients, a shamanic healer and life coach:
Reinvent her social media content daily without any real strategy
Create a new offer every time she had a new idea (adding more things to her plate)
Had no strategy for taking her clients from free content into her paid content
After implementing proper systems, she:
Refined her product suite creating a clear pathway for potential clients
Built a content bank to streamline her content plan
Has increased her conversions and her profit while working less
Example from my own business
And in my own business, my pre-burnout content strategy looked like:
Creating 3-4 IG posts per week, as well as a Podcast and email to my list
No real strategy to that content - just “I need to get content out”
I didn’t leverage my Sacral response either
